About Derek

Academics:

I am a student of Classical Civilizations at the University of Windsor. Classics is a history and language program which focuses on ancient Greek and Roman cultures. This program teaches koin (biblical) Greek and Latin (and Spanish), as well as provides a firm understanding of Western Civilization from about 600 BCE to about 400 CE. My extended interests is in Theology and History.

I chose Classical Civilizations because through this program I will have a better understanding of the Western World and Western Christianity in general. I will also have a better grasp of the first century world in which our Lord lived, our New Testament was written, and His Church was birthed and grew.

One of my long time aspirations is to write a book connecting the grand themes of scripture, hopefully shining new light on old truths.

Background:

After I became a Christian at age 11 my family and I attended a Pentecostal church which became the garden in which I grew in the Lord. Eventually I would attend a Pentecostal Bible College in Saskatchewan and for a brief period of time I interned in a small Pentecostal church in Nova Scotia.

For a myriad of reasons, perhaps summarized as disillusionment in the leadership structure and what I perceived to be a Fundamentalists anti-intellectual mentality, I left the Pentecostal church and nested in a Nazarene community where I now serve on the board and preach on occasion.

Therefore it is safe to say that I find my theological home most comfortably in the Wesleyan Reformed tradition. Having said that, I am a huge advocate of inter-denominational (or ecumenical) dialogue. Lets talk.

I do however, have somewhat of a disdain for Christian traditions, and/or personalities who represent those traditions, who lack godly humility as modeled for us by the Lord himself in Philippians 2:5-11. This disdain tends to “bleed” through my writings from time to time. I apologize in advance.

Been Influenced By…

Perhaps the greatest theological influence on my life in the past few years has been Anglican scholar N.T. Wright. He seems to have a way of wording things that helped me to move beyond certain traditional restraints and idealistic impasses.

On a personal level I have had a few friends I looked to (and still look to from time to time) who have helped me wrestle through difficult issues. Bob Williamson (former youth pastor-turned Pastor and long time friend) and Harry Heimann, mentor, friend and gifted bible teacher.

Getting Down and Personal:

Here are a few personal facts about me. I have been married to a beautiful wife of Mexican descent since 2007. We have no children but are planning for two. I work in Christian retail as the Marketing Manager full-time. We live in Windsor Ontario which is a border city to Detroit Michigan and we love to travel.

That’s about it.
